The Bletterbach gorge (Late Permian - Early Triassic)

MARCO AVANZINI, MASSIMO BERNARDI, ANNA BREDA, EVELYN KUSTATSCHER & PIERO GIANOLLA

10.00 a.m. Start from the Geoparc visitor center

Since it is not possible to visit the gorge as a whole (because of a small land slide in 2009), we will need to divide the group:

  • Visit to the top of the "Athesian porphyric platform", the transition to the Upper Permian Val Gardena Sandstone with various climatic signals, up to the bottom of the waterfall, as well as a small test gallery. (Guides: MARCO AVANZINI, ANNA BREDA)
  • From the top of the waterfall (with the famous cuticle horizon), with the upper part of the Val Garden Sandstone, along the gorge to the end of the gorge, the transition between the Upper Permian Bellerophon Formation and Lower Triassic Werfen Formation. (Guides: PIERO GIANOLLA, EVELYN KUSTATSCHER, MASSIMO BERNARDI)

4.00 p.m. Visit to the Museum of the Geoparc Bletterbach with some small refreshments

9.00 p.m. Nereo Preto & Marco Franceschi: Geology of the Latemar

5.30 p.m. Pietralba (Parking) for a view and discussion on the Latemar and Catinaccio / Rosengarten (NEREO PRETO)

6.15 p.m. Parking Carezza Lake (near Passo di Costalunga) another view of the Latemar and Catinaccio / Rosengarten Middle Triassic carbonate platforms

7.00 p.m. arrival to the hotel in Campitello di Fassa and dinner

Passo Feudo, Mt. Agnello and Latemar (Middle Triassic)

MARCO FRANCESCHI, STEFANO FURIN, PIERO GIANOLLA, PAOLO MIETTO, NEREO PRETO, GUIDO ROGHI & MARCO STEFANI

9.00 a.m. Start from Predazzo with the cableway up to Passo Feudo

10.00 a.m. General geologic introduction at Passo Feudo

The group will be divided. Option b) is only for experienced hikers, part of the program is off trail, although no alpinistic skills are required:

  • Dos Capel to Buse de Tresca (geological pathway): here the basinal succession can be observed: Richthofen Conglomerate, Morbiac Limestone, Moena Fm., Livinallongo Fm., as well as the Stava line and the volcanic deposits on top of the Agnello platform, the magmatic dikes and the contact metamorphism (Guides: ELIO DELLANTONIO, STEFANO FURIN, PIERO GIANOLLA, MARCO STEFANI)
  • Rifugio Torre di Pisa (NB: a hike off-trail on a steep grassy meadow): Here the Richthofen conglomerate, Morbiac Limestone and Contrin Fm. Can be observed, at the Rifugio Torre di Pisa also the platform interior. From there it goes to Cima Feudo where the marginal boundstones, slope facies and toe-ofslope calcarenites can be observed. (Guides: MARCO FRANCESCHI, NEREO PRETO, GUIDO ROGHI)

5.00 p.m. Visit to the Predazzo Museum, hosted by dott. Elio Dellantonio.

6.00 p.m. Paolo Mietto: Middle Triassic Ammonoid biostratigraphy

7.00 p.m. Back to Campitello di Fassa (TN) for dinner and overnight

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

Col Rodella and P.ta Grohmann (Upper Ladinian - Lower Carnian)

PIERO GIANOLLA, PAOLO MIETTO, VINCENZO PICOTTI, GUIDO ROGHI & MARCO STEFANI

9.00 a.m. Start with the cableway up to Col Rodella: Introduction on the tectonics of the Dolomites

9.30 a.m. Along the path to Punta Grohmann section: view of the "Caotico Eterogeneo" and vulcanoclastics. Following the path in direction north-northwest a succession starting from the chaotic of the Fernazza Fm., the volcanics, and the Marmolada conglomerate with high and low density turbidites. In the section the passage between the Wengen Fm. and the St. Cassian Fm. can be observed.

4.30 p.m. Back to Campitello di Fassa (TN)

5.00 p.m. Vigo di Fassa, Start with the cableway up to Ciampedie for a spectacular view of the Catinaccio, Torri del Vajolet, Pale Rabbiose and Larsec. The topic of the 4 stops are the large scale geometry and the start up of the middle Triassic high relieve carbonate platforms. At the end, some refreshment offered by the local authorities.

7.00 p.m. Back to Campitello di Fassa (TN) for dinner and overnight.

Sella Group Ronda (Middle and Upper Triassic)

PIERO GIANOLLA, NEREO PRETO, GUIDO ROGHI & MARCO STEFANI

8.30 a.m. start with some buses for the Sella Ronda: from Campitello di Fassa toward Canazei, Passo Pordoi (Col Rossi - Sass Beccé), Passo Campolongo (Caotico Eterogeneo), Passo Gardena (up to Col di Frea), Passo Sella (the famous "cipit" boulder and the Locomotiva section). The day is dedicated to the isolated Carnian atoll of the Sella Group and to the discussion about different generations of post volcanic carbonate platforms and related basinal deposits.

7.00 p.m. Back to Campitello di Fassa (TN) for dinner and overnight.

9.00 p.m. Guido Roghi: The amber of the Dolomites

Lagazuoi, Col dei Bos and Tofana di Rozes (Upper Triassic)

ANNA BREDA, PIERO GIANOLLA, NEREO PRETO & GUIDO ROGHI

8.00 a.m. start from Campitello di Fassa to the Falzarego Pass via Passo Fedaia, where during the travel, we will have a wonderful view of the Marmolada and of the volcanics and volcaniclastics above the platform.

9.30 a.m. Passo Falzarego where an introduction about the geology of the area will be given. Afterwards the group will take a cableway to the top of the Lagazuoi (2650 m asl)

A path leads to Col dei Bos via Forcella Travenanzes, where the top Cassian Dolomite (lower Carnian), the Heiligkreuz and Travenanzes Fms are visible. From Col dei Bos, long the old military road, we will come down to the hill crossing different basinal units and the interfingering with the carbonate platforms. In the afternoon, from the Rifugio Bai de Dones a cablelift takes the group up to the 5 Torri for a panoramic view of the Tofane and Cernera.

The day is dedicated to the stratigraphic organisation of the Carnian interval with the progressive closure of the basins related to the progradation of the carbonate and the terrigenous shoreline and the definitive flattening of the paleotopography (Dolomia Cassiana, S. Cassiano, Heiligkreuz, Travenanzes Fms, and Dolomia Principale).

The end of the field trip is close to Cortina d'Ampezzo (BL), BUT we will be back to Campitello for the last night!!!!!! This night is included in the registration fee.

For those, that need to get on the same evening back to Bolzano or Padova, please contact us beforehand.

With the exception of Rif. Torre di Pisa (program (b), Tuesday, 7th) all excursions only require basic walking skills, however, most localities are on high mountain environments (up to 2400 m altitude), thus warm/waterproof coating and walking boots are recommended.

Transport will be arranged by private cars and possibly some mini-buses.
